TOEFL Syllabus

Internet Based TOEFL (iBT) test your english proficiency, used for admission to schools throughout the world . The internet based TOEFL has four parts: Reading, Writing, Listening and Speaking. All students applying for MS in USA who does not speak English as their native language must provide proof of English proficiency.

TOEFL is a four hour exam with four sections.

  • Listening (60-90 minutes): 6-7 listening test, listen to an audio clip and based on that audio clip you have to answer some questions.
  • Reading (60-80 minutes): 3-4 passage questions, read a passage and answer questions based on the passage.
  • Speaking (20 minutes): six questions, you have to speak for a few seconds about a given subject.
  • Writing (50 minutes): two questions, write an essay on given topic.

What is TOEFL marking scheme?

Total score = 120. No negative marks for wrong answers.
  • Listening   – 30
  • Speaking   – 30
  • Reading     – 30
  • Writing      – 30
You have to score a minimum of 100 to get into a good university.

How frequently can you take TOEFL?

You can retake the test as many times as you wish, but cannot take it more than once in a 3-day period.

What are the four sections of TOEFL?

Listening (60-90 minutes)

  • There are 6 set of questions
  • Each set may be a conversation, lecture or a discussion.
  • The conversation are 3 minutes long and lecture are about 5 minutes long.
  • There will be pictures and visual cues for conversation and lectures.
  • The questions will be written out on the screen. Most of the questions are multiple choice, but some may have special directions.
  • You cannot return to previous questions. Once you click OK you cannot go back.

Speaking (20 minutes)

  • There are six set of question.
  • first two sets are general questions; other sets are questions from campus and academic topics
  • General question: after you see and hear the question you will be given 15 seconds to prepare and 45 seconds to record the answers.
  • Campus and academic questions:  after you see and hear the question you will be given 20-30 seconds to prepare and 60 seconds to record the answers.

Reading (60-80 minutes)

  • Three to four passages with an average of 12-14 questions.
  • Long passages with 700-800 words.
  • Most of the questions are multiple choice, but some may have special directions.
  • Some questions may have two or more answers.
  • You can go back to the previous questions.

Writing (50 minutes)

  • There are two sets of questions.
  • The first question, independent writing, ask you to agree or disagree with a statement or express your opinion (30 minutes).
  • Second question is an integrated task, the topic is based on both a lecture and a reading passage (20 minutes).
  • You have to write 150-250 words for integrated task and 300-400 words for independent writing
